Oracle Java SE End of Support & Distribution FAQ

Updated

Q: I use Oracle Java SE via Red Hat distribution channels. Am I impacted?

A: Yes. Certain Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Middleware subscriptions bundled Oracle JAVA SE software. If you purchased these Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Middleware subscriptions on or before November 30, 2017, you had access to this bundled Oracle Java SE software in the Oracle Java content set of your Red Hat Customer Portal account. After November 30, 2017, the Oracle Java SE software was no longer available for download from that location.

Q: Will I be able to access this software and consume updates via Satellite?

A: No. Oracle Java SE will be removed from the Customer Portal and Red Hat Satellite (versions 5 and 6) content sets(ISO's). Systems configured to consume content from Red Hat Satellite will not be able to access Oracle Java SE updates after they have synced with the Customer Portal.

Q: How can I access Oracle Java packages after 30 November 2018?

A: Contact Oracle to get the access to Oracle Java SE software. Or, choose OpenJDK (Open Java Development Kit).
NOTE : The terms of use of the Oracle Java SE software are defined by the Oracle end user license agreement shown here https://www.redhat.com/en/about/eula.

Q: Does Red Hat offer an alternative to Oracle Java SE?

A: Red Hat recommends OpenJDK as the preferred Java SE compliant solution. OpenJDK is an integrated component of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and available to all active Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions. OpenJDK is released under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL 2 and 2+). Red Hat is committed to ongoing support of the OpenJDK platform.

Q: What is OpenJDK?

A: For an integrated Java solution consider OpenJDK (Open Java Development Kit) which is the default Red Hat Java development and runtime environment. OpenJDK is an open source and fully compliant implementation of the Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE). The OpenJDK upstream community project is currently sponsored and led by Oracle; the OpenJDK software is released under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL 2 and 2+). Red Hat is committed to ongoing support of the OpenJDK platform.
