Satellite 6.3 Feature Overview: Auto-attach Bootdisk for VMWare [Tech Preview]
Satellite 6.3 introduces the auto-attach bootdisk for VMWare feature. This is a Tech Preview feature in Satellite 6.3.
When provisioning on VMWare, bootdisk can be configured to auto-attach in a way that PXE-less or DHCP-less boot is possible directly from the Satellite 6 UI.
This feature is currently supported only for VMWare.
All Satellite supported versions of VMware are compatible with this feature.
This is important as in some customer networks PXE boot may not be possible due to network or security policies in the organization. With this tech preview feature, Satellite 6.3 users can connect to a bootdisk or bootiso and boot from that image instead.
To use this feature, complete the following steps:
-
In the Satellite Web UI select Hosts --> Create Host.
-
In the Host tab, select the "Deploy on" drop down and choose an appropriate deployment method. Bare Metal won't work.
-
In the Interfaces tab, add an appropriate network interface. Typically under NIC Type this will be 'vmxnet3' or 'e1000'.
-
In the Operating System tab, under Provisioning Method you will now see a new option title "Boot Disk based". Select Boot Disk Based.
-
In the Virtual Machine tab, select the checkbox "Add a CD-ROM drive to the virtual machine."
-
When you submit your create host job the host will be created in VMWare and will boot through an auto-attached ISO. This is a per-host bootdisk ISO.
