Satellite 6.3 Feature Overview: Tracer [Tech Preview]

Updated

NOTE:  The Tracer feature is considered Tech Preview in Satellite 6.3 to 6.7.  Starting with Satellite 6.8, tracer is now supported.

Satellite 6.3 introduces Tracer; an integration with the Tracer tool which monitors running processes and identifies if they need to be restarted due to package updates or similar activities. This feature is in tech preview with Satellite 6.3.

More information about Tracer can be found at the product page: Content from tracer-package.com is not included.Content from tracer-package.com is not included.http://tracer-package.com/.
At a high level, Tracer considers applications as outdated and in need of a restart if any files used by the application have been updated since the application was last restarted.

Tracer is in tech preview and therefore is an optional component that is installed separately from the rest of the katello host tools.
To install Tracer, install the katello-host-tools-tracer package on the content host:

yum install katello-host-tools-tracer
katello-tracer-upload

When installed you will be able to see “Traces” by selecting Hosts → Content Hosts → Traces

Any traces will be listed for the content host in the Satellite Web UI.
In the event that Tracer is not installed this menu item will still exist, but the contents of the page will be empty.

In the Satellite Web UI, click Hosts -> All Hosts → [Host name]
In the Properties table you will see a row for Traces if Tracer is installed. If Tracer is not installed, you will not see this row.
