OpenShift Virtualization - Technology Preview Support Policy

Updated

Overview

OpenShift Virtualization (formerly known as Container-native Virtualization) is made available to Red Hat OpenShift customers as a series of Technology Preview (TP) releases.

Technology Preview provides customers early access to products or product features. The purpose of this article is to detail the scope of support for OpenShift Virtualization Tech Preview and its impact on dependant products.

Details

OpenShift Virtualization is an installable component purposed for OpenShift Container Platform (OCP). With an existing or newly deployed OCP cluster, OpenShift customers are able to install and try OpenShift Virtualization per the guidance provided in the OpenShift Virtualization documentation.

Whilst Red Hat considers that OpenShift Virtualization Technology Preview may ultimately become generally available, customer feedback is vital to help us recognize issues and steer the product to the enterprise standards our customers expect. We will attempt to resolve any OpenShift Virtualization issue for entitled OCP customers. Issues should be raised through the Red Hat Customer Portal.

Support SLA

As with all Technology Preview products and features, customers are advised not to use OpenShift Virtualization in production environments. There is no production level support for OpenShift Virtualization or the OCP cluster for which it it installed. Installing OpenShift Virtualization will invalidate production level support for an OCP cluster. All cases opened for OpenShift Virtualization AND the underlying OCP cluster on which it is installed will be worked ONLY with a Severity 4 SLA.

Information on our SLAs can be found in our severity definitions.

OCP Environment

OCP clusters should be configured per the guidance in the OpenShift Virtualization documentation. Throughout the series of Technology Preview releases the following constraints should be observed:

  • OpenShift Virtualization deployment should be done on a fresh stand-alone OCP 4 cluster ONLY.
  • Deployment should be contained to only a single OCP Cluster (no federation)
  • OpenShift Virtualization TP is only available for x86_64 architecture
  • OpenShift Virtualization TP is not available for any Red Hat hosted environments, such as OpenShift Dedicated

Fixes and Upgrades

Red Hat will make commercially reasonable effort to resolve customer issues. Bug reports will be created and forward to engineering teams as proposed for inclusion in a future release. Customers are expected to use the latest TP release of OpenShift Virtualization, aligned with the most recent release of OCP.

The usage of OpenShift Virtualization may impair standard functionality on an OpenShift cluster. Customers are encouraged to remove OpenShift Virtualization before carrying out OCP operations such as upgrades.

Whilst OpenShift Virtualization is released as TP, a seamless upgrade path between TP releases may not be available. Customers may be expected to remove a non-current version of OpenShift Virtualization and install the latest available version to obtain new fixes. Instructions specific to releases will be documented.
