Updating rhn-client to enable enhanced reporting with Satellite or RHN
Updated
Why do I need to update rhn-client-tools?
To support the 2013 Packaging Model, we now report the number of CPU sockets in a system.
To take full advantage of the more flexible model and enable this functionality for Satellite 5.6 or greater, you will need to update rhn-client-tools on your system.
The minimum versions required are as follows:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ELS
- up2date-4.9.1-33.el4
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
- rhn-client-tools-0.4.20.1-1.el5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
- rhn-client-tools-1.0.0.1-8.el6
For information about how to update these packages using up2date (for RHEL 4) or yum (for RHEL 5 and RHEL 6), please see:
- What is yum and how do I use it?
- What are the yum equivalents of up2date and rpm common tasks on Red Hat Enterprise Linux?
What happens if I register a system with new SKUs but older rhn-client-tools?
The older client tools are unable to accurately report the CPU Sockets of a system, this can lead to inconsistencies between different tools. Your system however will still be able to receive updates. We discuss this problem further in [With RHN and SAM, Why Does Server and Client Compliance Reporting Disagree?](https://access.redhat.com/site/articles/477873)
