Image builder hosted service is transitioning to single target environment blueprints
Change to image builder multi-target environment blueprint support on the Hybrid Cloud Console
The image builder service on the Hybrid Cloud Console transitioned to single-target environment blueprints on September 10, 2026. Target environments include bare metal (.iso), virtualization platform (.qcow2), public and private cloud providers, and many others. Most customers already use single-target environment blueprints that only build an .iso image or only build a .qcow2 image, and were not affected by this change.
Multi-target environment image blueprints are deprecated in the RHEL 10 web console and will be removed in a future release.
How to prepare
If you have a multi-target environment blueprint, you can split that blueprint into multiple single-target environment blueprints by using the download and import functions of the image builder service. Details of these functions are found in Chapters 3.8 and 3.9 of Deploying and managing RHEL systems in the hybrid cloud. You will download the current multi-target environment image blueprint, update it to target only one environment, then import the original blueprint once for each additional target environment, giving each a new name and target environment, and reviewing the customization options for accuracy.

Q: What if I have an existing image blueprint with multiple target environments, like bare metal (.iso) and virtualization platform (.qcow2), and don’t prepare before this change?
A: The Red Hat image builder team will create new image blueprints on your behalf - one for each target environment - with no action needed from you. All relevant configuration for the target environment will be preserved, and you can build new images from the single target environment blueprint just as you do today. You will lose the build history for the original blueprint.
Q: Does this change affect any blueprints I have created locally on a RHEL build machine?
A: The change on September 10, 2026, only affects multi-target environment blueprints created and managed in the hosted image builder service on the Hybrid Cloud Console. Multi-target environment blueprint support is deprecated and will be removed from a future release of the RHEL 10 web console.
Q: Can I still create one blueprint to work with multiple target environments with Red Hat image builder?
A: Yes. The image builder service that runs on your RHEL system, called composer-cli in older versions of RHEL and image-builder cli in recent versions of RHEL, allows you to input a single blueprint of image customizations that you can use to build for multiple target environments. The image blueprint needs to contain the customizations to support all intended targets. For example, a blueprint that will be used to build a bare metal installer (.iso) and virtual image (.qcow2) will have installer customizations that are relevant only for the bare metal installer and disk and partitioning customizations that are only relevant for the virtual image. The image build process selects the relevant customizations from the blueprint for each image.
