RHBA-2017:1304 - libvirt bug fix and enhancement update
Synopsis
libvirt bug fix and enhancement update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory None
Topic
Updated libvirt packages that fix several bugs and add one enhancement are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.
Description
The libvirt library contains a C API for managing and interacting with the virtualization capabilities of Linux and other operating systems. In addition, libvirt provides tools for remote management of virtualized systems.
This update fixes the following bugs:
-
Previously, the libvirt daemon failed when starting a domain where the network interface script path was an empty string. Consequently, this caused the migration of some virtual machines from Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 7.2 to release 7.3 to fail. With this update, libvirt accepts an empty string as a valid script path but does not execute it. As a result, the migration of guest virtual machines from Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 7.2 to release 7.3 succeed. (BZ#1429510)
-
Prior to this update, when saving and restoring the MAC addresses of Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) virtual functions (VFs), multiple problems occurred. These problems occurred when the addresses were used for both hostdev assignment and macvtap passthrough mode. With this update, these problems have been fixed (BZ#1442040)
-
Previously, on very large installations, libvirt sometimes failed to start some guests and displayed a "Too many open files error". With this update, the default open file handle limits have been substantially increased for the libvirtd, virtlockd, and virtlogd processes, allowing for several thousand guests on a host. The limits can be increased further in the systemd service files for these processes. (BZ#1442043)
-
Prior to this update, hotplugging user type interfaces was blocked. Consequently, users were unable to hotplug user type interfaces. With this update, the block has been removed. As a result, users can hotplug their interfaces. (BZ#1445231)
In addition, this update adds the following enhancement:
- In this update, the Level-3 CPU cache can be enabled for virtual CPUs using the
sub-element of the element in the domain XML. This can significantly increase performance in some workloads. (BZ#1447612)
Users of libvirt are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix these bugs and add this enhancement. After installing the updated packages, libvirtd will be restarted automatically.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied.
