RHBA-2018:2440 - samba bug fix update
Synopsis
samba bug fix update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory None
Topic
Updated samba packages that fix several bugs are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.
Description
Samba is an open-source implementation of the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol and the related Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol, which allows PC-compatible machines to share files, printers, and various information.
This update fixes the following bugs:
-
After joining an Active Directory domain using the "net ads join" command, the net utility verifies if the DNS entry was successfully updated. Previously, this verification failed and the utility displayed a segmentation fault error. This update fixes the problem. As a result, the net utility displays a meaningful error message if updating the DNS failed. (BZ#1581369)
-
In certain situations, errors occur during the server message block version 1 (SMB1) session setup. However, the smbd service did not handle these errors correctly and terminated unexpectedly. As a consequence, the connection to the client terminated. The bug has been fixed. As a result, smbd handles errors during SMB1 session setup correctly. (BZ#1581373)
-
Previously, if the secrets database did not exist and the "kerberos method" parameter in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file was set to "secrets and keytab", the smbd service terminated unexpectedly when it tried to access the non-existent database. With this update, Samba correctly handles an empty and a non-existing secrets database and falls back to the Kerberos keytab set in the "dedicated keytab file" parameter. As a result, smdb no longer crashes in the mentioned scenario. (BZ#1581376)
-
Previously, when a user connected to a distributed file system (DFS) share using the smbclient utility and executed the dfsgetinfo command, the smbd service handling the connection failed with a segmentation fault error. The bug has been fixed, and as a result, smbd no longer crashes when executing dfsgetinfo on a DFS share using smbclient. (BZ#1581377)
-
Previously, Samba set an incorrect guest session flag in the reply of the session setup for Server Message Block (SMB) version 2 and 3 connections. As a consequence, users who connected from a Windows 10 client failed to log into a Samba NT4 domain. With this update, Samba now correctly distinguishes between anonymous and guest sessions. As a result, users can log in from Windows 10 clients again. (BZ#1584126)
After updating Samba, verify the /etc/samba/smb.conf file using the testparm utility.
Samba does not support downgrading databases. Before you upgrade, shut down Samba and back up all *.tdb files in the /var/lib/samba/ directory.
Users of samba are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix these bugs. After installing this update, the smb service will be restarted automatically.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied.
