RHEL 7 or higher can't install guest OS from CD/DVD-ROM

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8
  • KVM
  • libvirt

Issue

  • When using virt-manager GUI to create a new guest, CD/DVD cannot be selected as installation source, only "Use ISO Image" option is available.

Resolution

Current workaround is to create an ISO from DVD and use it as installation source:

# dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/dvd.iso

Root Cause

CD/DVD host passthrough has been disabled from RHEL 7 as documented in This content is not included.RHBZ#760885. We are currently considering removing this option completely from GUI.
