SAN disk IO errors ("Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]") with ASC=0x25 ASCQ=0x01 on EMC Clariion

Solution Verified - Updated

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, 6, 7
  • EMC Clariion storage

Issue

  • Server can see errors similar to the following:
kernel: sd 1:0:2:0: [sdd] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
kernel: sd 1:0:2:0: [sdd] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
kernel: sd 1:0:2:0: [sdd] ASC=0x25 ASCQ=0x1
kernel: sd 1:0:2:0: [sdd] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdd, sector 0

Resolution

  • SAN disk is in replication mode, this output is expected (depending on vendor).

  • EMC returns 25/01 as indication of an inactive snapshot lun. Contact EMC for further information.

    • You can see this determination in multipath -ll when running the emc hardware handler:
sdN: checker msg is "emc_clariion_checker: Active path to inactive snapshot WWN 600601600ea04e005e60d35fbbbcb6d6."
