Can glusterfs be used for the SAP NetWeaver shared filesystems?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6-7 (RHEL)
- Red Hat Gluster Storage 3.1 (RHGS)
- SAP Netviewer 7.0 - 7.4
Issue
Is it possible to use glusterfs exported volumes for /sapmnt/SID and /usr/sap/trans?
Is that supported?
Resolution
SAP recommendations about the support of specific filesystems, are reported in the following SAP Note:
Content from launchpad.support.sap.com is not included.405827 - Linux: Recommended file systems.
As documented there, for SAP NetWeaver based environments, any file system that is supported by the distributor can be used, so using glusterfs would be possible.
As this is not tested it is highly recommended to self test this as outlined in diagnostic steps below, before using it in production.
Diagnostic Steps
After mounting SAP shares (sapmnt and trans) using gluster native client, execute some failover tests of RHGS nodes: the SAP applications are expected to continue to work flawlessly.
Small performance differences has been reported during the execution of startsap or stopsap commands.
