How to use Virtual Datacenter subscriptions in Cloud Platforms ?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Microsoft Azure
- AWS
- GCP
- IBM Cloud
- OCI
Issue
- Is there a way to subscribe the systems running under AWS using Virtual Datacenter subscriptions ?
- Not able to configure virt-who service on VM running under AWS.
- Can Virtual Datacenter subscriptions be used with AWS,Azure,GCP or OCI systems ?
Resolution
- It is not possible to use Virtual Datacenter subscriptions in Cloud-based Virtual Machines because Virtual Datacenter subscriptions require the configuration of virt-who and information about the hypervisors is necessary while configuring virt-who service.
- Instance-based subscriptions such as
RHEL for Server (Physical or Virtual Nodes)can be used to subscribe to Virtual Machines running in Cloud-based Virtual Machines.
There is an exception to this in the following use case: VMware offers a private cloud experience on Oracle, AWS, Azure, IBM Cloud, and Google Compute Platform (GCP). Each offering has a different brand name:
- on AWS it is VMware Cloud (VMC)
- on Azure it is Azure VMware Solution (AVS)
- on GCP it is Google Compute VMware Engine (GCVE)
- on IBM Cloud it is IBM Cloud for VMWare Solutions.
- OCVS (Oracle Cloud VMware Solution)
For all 5 VMware offerings listed, the RHEL VDC is a workable solution. Please contact our support team for more information.
**** NOTE: VDC Subscription SKUs are not transactable via Cloud Marketplace private offers *******
Root Cause
- Information about the hypervisors will not be available, with a cloud-based virtual machine.
Diagnostic Steps
- Check if a user is having cloud-based environment.
