RHEL 8 and later major versions fail to install on VMware guest using scsi controller of type 'LSI Logic SAS' OR 'LSI Logic Parallel'

Solution Verified - Updated

Environment

  • VMware virtual environment.
  • LSI Logic SAS/LSI Logic Parallel.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and later major RHEL versions.

Issue

  • RHEL 8 and later major versions (such as RHEL 9 and 10) fail to install on VMware guest using scsi controller of type 'LSI Logic SAS' OR 'LSI Logic Parallel'

Resolution

  • The installation can be proceeded by changing scsi controller type to VMware Paravirtual which will use vmw_pvscsi as underlying storage driver.

Root Cause

  • Following drivers of LSI Logic are deprecated in RHEL8 and later major versions, hence while installation disks will not get detected.

    mptbase
    mptctl
    mptsas
    mptscsih
    mptspi

  • More details can be found here on removed drivers: "Removed hardware support" within the "Considerations in adopting RHEL 8" documentation.
