What is the supported number of nodes for a RHEL Resilient Storage cluster?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (with the Resilient Storage Add-on)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 (with the Resilient Storage Add-on)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (with the Resilient Storage Add-on)
Issue
- Support for 32 nodes was added for Red Hat High Availability Clusters with RHEL 7.7 and RHEL 8.1. Does this support extend to Resilient Storage clusters utilizing
gfs2/clvmd/dlm/cmirrord?
Resolution
Resilient Storage clusters (i.e., clusters using dlm and related components) only support up to 16 nodes because dlm has a limitation of 16 nodes. Specifically, the following components are limited to 16 nodes because they were require the use of dlm:
dlmand theocf:pacemaker:controldPacemaker resource agentclvmdand theocf:heartbeat:clvmPacemaker resource agentcmirrordlvmlockd+dlm(via theocf:pacemaker:controldPacemaker resource agent)gfs2filesystems
High Availability clusters (i.e., clusters that do not use any of the components above) support up to 32 nodes on RHEL 7.7 and above and on RHEL 8.1 and above.

Root Cause
Expansion to 32-node support has not been tested or investigated for Resilient Storage products. If you or your organization is interested in this functionality, please reach out to Red Hat Support to discuss it further.
