VM gets deleted when unregistering the system from Red Hat Satellite 6.

Solution Verified - Updated

Environment

  • Red Hat Satellite 6

Issue

  • Unregistering a system from Satellite causes the VM to be destroyed from the compute resource because of how the settings are configured.

1) First setting

Administer -> Settings -> Content
Delete Host upon unregister -> yes (Default: no)

2) Second setting

Administer -> Settings -> Provisioning
Destroy associated VM on host delete -> yes (Default: yes)

3) VM is associated to a compute resource

With these settings enabled you will end up destroying the VM from the backend if the VM is linked to a compute resource in Satellite upon unregistering a system.

  • Option Destroy associated VM on host delete should be disabled by default, Since VM gets deleted from compute resources while unregistering it from the satellite.

Resolution

  • Modify one of the settings to avoid VM's getting deleted while unregistering.
  • The issue to set the option false by default is being tracked by the engineering team under Bugzilla This content is not included.1804669.

Root Cause

  • Combination of settings causes a VM to be deleted when the system performs subscription-manager unregister or subscription-manager register --force
