Environment

  • Cisco UCS running VMWare ESX
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.1 guest

Issue

  • A 3rd party java application is performing poorly and utilizing higher than expected CPU on a 4-cpu RHEL server than when the same load is run against a small laptop running Windows.

Resolution

Some improvements were seen by disabling Power Stepping on the ESX host.
