Spice protocol is being deprecated in RHEL 8.3

Solution Verified - Updated

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.3
  • Red Hat Virtualization (RHV)

Issue

Spice remote display protocol is being deprecated in RHEL8.3 and will be removed in RHEL9.

  • How about RHV deployments?
  • What are the alternatives?

Resolution

According the following release notes in RHEL8.3 documentation, Spice protocol is being deprecated in RHEL. This means, that we will keep it at it's current state through the RHEL8 life cycle, but in flagging it deprecated we want to give customers a chance to align their long term planning in the future.

However, Spice protocol is still fully supported in RHV deployments and will be fully supported throughout the whole RHV life cycle, according to RHV life cycle phases definition.

Alternative solutions to remote display protocol for RHEL KVM are VNC and other 3d party solutions like RDP, HP RGS, or Mechdyne TGX.
