Unable to run the satellite-installer command on the Red Hat Satellite server and getting output "Could not get default values, check log file at /var/log/foreman-installer/satellite.log for more information".

Environment

• Red Hat Satellite 6.
• Red Hat Enterprises Linux 7.

Issue

• New installation of the Red Hat Satellite 6 server is failing with below error:

Could not get default values, check log file at /var/log/foreman-installer/satellite.log for more information

• Unable to configure Satellite 6 on the newly build RHEL system.

Resolution

• Make sure that the Satellite server hostname is set as FQDN.

Root Cause

• Shortname is used as a hostname of the Satellite server instead of FQDN.
• satellite-installer can not get the default value of dns_zone if the FQDN is not used as hostname.

Diagnostic Steps

• Following logs observed in /var/log/foreman-installer/satellite.log:
