Using Alternate-Tab in Gnome 3.32 or later
Environment
- RHEL 8.3+
Issue
- Want to use alt-tab to switch windows instead of only applications
- Cannot install gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab
- Extension gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab is installed, but cannot enable in Tweak tool or browser
Resolution
- Open Keyboard Shortcuts in Settings
- Scroll down to "Switch Windows" (under Navigation section)
- Click on "Switch Windows"
- Press key sequence desired (Alt-Tab or Super-Tab is common)
Root Cause
The Content from extensions.gnome.org is not included.gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab package was obsoleted in RHEL 8.3 by the gnome-shell-extension-common package. This is because, as per Content from blogs.gnome.org is not included.the Gnome blog, the extension is no longer needed. Instead follow the Resolution steps above.
Diagnostic Steps
- Alt-Tab or Super-Tab only move between different applications and you must use Alt-
or Super-to change between different windows of the applications. - Running "yum install gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab" results in "Package gnome-shell-extension-common is already installed." / "Nothing to do." but package is not actually installed on system
