Implications to consider when upgrading OpenShift Data Foundation

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation (RHODF)
    • 4

Issue

  • What should be considered when upgrading ODF?

Resolution

Note: for ODF upgrades (eg. 4.9 to 4.10), Proactive Cases (different cases for Openshift and ODF) should be opened several days in advance, for Red Hat to review the status of the cluster in advance, and help in case of issues happen during the upgrade. For the Proactive Cases, please provide an OCP cluster must-gather (in the OCP case) and an ODF specific must-gather (in the ODF case). Refer to How to open a PROACTIVE case for patching or upgrading Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform for additional information about Proactive Support Cases.

In addition to the ODF upgrade guide, other implications to consider when upgrading ODF:

  • Do not skip minor upgrades when upgrading. All ODF upgrades should be done in sequence (eg. 4.9 to 4.10 to 4.11, etc). Note the minor version is the y in 4.y.z.
  • When upgrading ODF to next minor upgrade, always upgrade from the latest maintenance release (the z in 4.y.z). For example, upgrade from 4.9.13 to 4.10. Do not upgrade from 4.9.11 to 4.10. This specific one does not apply to OCP upgrades, for which the This content is not included.upgrade path needs to be checked.
  • Upgrade Openshift platform first, then ODF.
  • Red Hat recommends using the same version of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform with Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation. See the This content is not included.Interoperability Matrix for more information about supported combinations of OpenShift Container Platform and Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation. This also gives you a table of supported versions, supported platforms, supported integrations, supported limits, image SHA values and version mapping.
  • The update time varies depending on the number of OSDs that run in the cluster.
  • During the upgrade, access to ODF will be degraded.
  • The release notes for each release of ODF can be found in the ODF documentation. This will detail any known issues, bug fixes and enhancements for each release.
  • For an overview of the upgrade process, refer to overview of the OpenShift Data Foundation update process.
  • Review the OpenShift Data Foundations Upgrade Pre-Checks.

Root Cause

For ODF upgrades, Proactive Support cases for ODF and for OCP (when applicable) should be opened in advance.
