Unable to create workspaces in Hybrid Cloud Console when the name contains certain special characters

Issue

  • Workspaces in Red Hat Enterprise Linux's online Inventory restrict the use of special symbols like dots (.) and ampersands (&) in names.
  • Previous capability to include dots in workspace names now seems to be unavailable.
  • Inability to accurately match customer workspaces with RHEL machine groups due to symbol restrictions.
  • Request for reinstatement of support for special symbols, including dots and ampersands, in workspace names for better customer and service organization.

Resolution

  • As mentioned in section 6.2.2. Workspace naming restrictions of Viewing and managing system inventory documentation:

    • Names can consist of lowercase letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens (-), and underscores (_).

    And hence, any other special characters like dots (.) and ampersands (&) are not allowed to be used in the name of the workspace.

  • Refer to the Root Cause section for more clarification and reach out to Red Hat Technical Support for any further concerns or clarifications required.

Root Cause

  • Characters like dots (.) and ampersands (&) can be interpreted as functional separators by DNS routing, web infrastructure, and database components, which can lead to inconsistencies and reliability issues across the platform.

  • To ensure predictable behavior and maintain long-term platform stability, workspace names are limited to a restricted character set.

  • Red Hat appreciates any feedback and understands the impact this has on naming conventions, but there is no plan to change this behavior at present.
