Is the use of VLAN tagged network device supported for cluster heartbeat communication?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5 (with the High Availability Add on)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6 (with the High Availability Add on)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 7 (with the High Availability Add on)
Issue
- Is a VLAN tagged network device supported for cluster heartbeat communication?
- Is a bonded network device with a slaved VLAN tagged network device supported for cluster heartbeat communication?
Resolution
The use of VLAN tagging on the network interface(with or without bonding) in Red Hat Enterprise Linux(RHEL) with the High Availability Add-On is official supported on RHEL 5.9 and RHEL 6.4 or higher.
The official Red Hat test infrastructure includes test for VLAN tagged network devices when they are used for:
- The cluster heartbeat network device.
- A Virtual IP Address(ip.sh resource) when used in a clustered service.
Red Hat does not expect any supportability issues on previous releases, and will continue to provide commercially reasonable support until this functionality is fully tested and supported.
Our support documentation may say that VLAN tagged interfaces are not supported, but that is only because they have not been included in the official Red Hat test infrastructure: This content is not included.Troubleshooting: 9.1. Cluster Does Not Form
