How are VDC subscriptions interpreted?

Solution Verified - Updated

Environment

  • Satellite 6
  • Virtual Data Center (VDC) subscription

Issue

  • Satellite has several hypervisor hosts from VMware vCenters entitled with subscriptions RH00006/RH00007. Looking at the guests subscriptions in the WebUI, they are attached to RH00051/RH00052. The expectation is to see all of the hosts associated with RH00006 or RH00007.
  • Where the SKU RH00051 and RH00052 are coming from?

Resolution

  • A Virtual Data Center (VDC) subscription is one type of host-based subscription offered by Red Hat. Host-based subscriptions are applied to a hypervisor host and inherited by its guests.
Host-based subscriptions consist of two parts, a pool attached to the virtualization manager or hypervisor, and a pool from which virtual guests inherit their subscription. The host-based subscription entitles the hypervisor to provide subscriptions to its virtual machines. With a host-based subscription, each guest requires one subscription, regardless of its virtual CPU configuration.

  • VDC subscriptions function in conjunction with derived and stackable SKUs.

  • A derived SKU is a subscription that works like a parent-child relationship for hypervisors and guests. The derived_sku gets created by virt-who after the physical SKU is attached to the hypervisor. A virtual machine that has no subscriptions attached can be registered with auto-attach or with an activation key that has auto-attach enabled. This way, the virtual machines will inherit the VDC subscription from the hypervisor.

  • A stackable SKU is a subscription that can be used in combination with other SKUs/subscriptions to provide the right amount of entitlements for a physical machine, host, and/or virtual machine.

  • It is important to note that the virtualization manager or hypervisor’s subscription for its own content does not provide entitlement to content for guests. If you have further questions about this, consult the This content is not included.Virtual Instances Guide.

Diagnostic Steps

  • Looking at a guest after subscribing that is using a VDC subscription with subscription-manager list --consumed it will display an SKU that is different from the hypervisor. In this example, RH00051, and will display a Subscription Type of Stackable. In this example, RH00051 is also a derived SKU that is derived from RH00006.
